Kent’s New Facilities Are Open

On Aug. 14, 2025, Kent Animal Shelter celebrated the grand opening of our new “Next Generation” dog kennel — a project years in the making that modernizes care for the animals we serve and the people who love them.

What’s New?

Our 3,000-square-foot facility was built to improve animal comfort, health, and adoptability. The building features 28 climate-controlled indoor kennels with attached outdoor runs, two dedicated puppy rooms, an outdoor play yard, a grooming/bathing space, a bright reception area, and a private meet-and-greet room for adopters. An advanced I/A septic system—required in the Pine Barrens to protect local waterways—was also installed as part of the project.

The renovation was completed 14 months after breaking ground with construction by J. Petrocelli Contracting. Public support helped push the project across the finish line, including a generous grant from Maddie’s Fund, a charitable foundation dedicated to animal welfare, including New York State grants ($200,000 toward structures and $75,000 for the sanitary system) and an additional $75,000 from Suffolk County, alongside generous private donors recognized at the opening.

Next door, the new Isolation Center adds eight additional dog kennels, cat and kitten housing, and an examination room to safely quarantine new arrivals. Our campus also includes The Cattery, Snowball’s Place (our cat retirement home), and a clinic offering low-cost spay/neuter, vaccines, and pet wellness products.

Animals first

During construction, dogs were temporarily cared for off-site and have now returned, settling into their new spaces while they wait for families. Every pet adopted from Kent is spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and tested as appropriate for common conditions.

A mission that continues

Since 1968, Kent has helped more than 40,000 animals find safety and love. The new kennel strengthens that work for the decades ahead.

The Future - The vision for the future for the past 25 years has been to build our "Next Generation" facility that better serves the needs of our homeless animals and expands upon Kent’s life-saving efforts and our mission. Mission accomplished!

The Answer - With your help, Kent's "Next Generation" facility replaces the aging, antiquated, deteriorating buildings that have been held together by band aids. Kent takes great pride in being the leading rescue and adoption center on the North Fork of Long Island.

To continue to provide the highest quality of services and programs as mandated by our founders and mission, this new facility has been constructed.

The Next Generation Facility Allows Us To:

  • Meet our future goals by increasing our adoption operations and ability to house approximately twice the number of homeless animals.
  • Meet animal needs by providing a new quarantine/medical treatment facility which will include animal exam rooms, an infirmary and dog and cat holding rooms.
  • Visitor needs for additional parking, walkways, benches, and landscaping to create an enriching environment for both people and pets.
