ADOPT A PET
We typically have over 100 beautiful, adoptable animals. Our dedicated staff can help you find your best friend. All of our pets are examined by one of our veterinarians, inoculated and spayed or neutered. Cats are tested for feline leukemia and the AIDS virus.  Dogs are tested for canine heartworm. If you adopt a puppy or kitten, you can bring them back to us to for spaying or neutering at the appropriate age.

Before adopting a pet, we urge you to ask yourself the following questions:

Am I ready to make a long term commitment? Adopting a pet means being responsible for the health and happiness of that pet for the next 10 to 15 years.

Is the animal right for my household and lifestyle? A strong, active pet may be too much for a young child or elderly person to handle. Small pets may be too delicate for rough play with children. Always make sure that everyone in the household agrees to adopt a pet.

Who will be the primary caretaker for the animal? One adult in the home should be designated as the primary caretaker so that the pet's needs do not become lost in the shuffle of busy schedules.

Can I afford a pet? Proper pet care includes food, toys, and regular vet care. Also, obedience training is a good investment. A well-trained dog is a pleasure and is welcome in public parks, on walks, and as a visitor. Research shows that people who take the time to train their dogs are more likely to keep them longer than people who don't.

By reviewing these five questions and coming to positive conclusions, prospective owners will be more aware of the care and commitment that companion animals require.

To receive advice and information on specific questions you may have about caring for a companion animal, or if you are interested in pet adoption, please call us at 727-5731. We are open 7 days a week and will be happy to answer any of your questions!

SPONSOR A PET
You may not be able to open your home to a pet at this time but we know your heart is in the right place. Many of our animals spend a number of months in our care. You can help us provide the care our animals need by becoming a sponsor. By viewing our Virtual Adoption Center , you are able to choose the pet you would like to sponsor. Each month our website has a Pets of the Month section which can also help you choose your foster pet. As a pet sponsor, you will receive a biography and a photo of your foster pet. You will also receive periodic updates on your pet's progress. When your foster pet has been placed in a new home, you will be notified of the good news. To be a SPONSOR, you send a monthly contribution of $20 dollars which helps us provide food, medical care, and shelter to a homeless animal. You may elect to be a co-sponsor of a pet and share the care of your foster dog or cat. A co-sponsor contribution is $10 dollars a month. Please call the shelter at 631-727-5731 if you would like to sponsor a pet. You can also email us at lisa@kentanimalshelter.com  for more information on becoming a sponsor.

PET THERAPY PROGRAM

Therapy for two AND four legged friends! Each week volunteers visit area senior care facilities in the Riverhead area with some of our adoptable pets. Pet therapy has proven to benefit pets and people too. A little love goes a long way in helping our seniors enjoy the pet companionship that they have known throughout their lives. Call us at 631-727-5731 if you wish to volunteer for this (or other shelter activities).

RETIREMENT HOME FOR CATS

Kent provides an alternative for cats who survive their owners. A simple clause in a person's will can provide long term care for a pet that otherwise may not have an alternative place to live. The cats live in a homelike atmosphere and are never caged. Veterinary care is always available if necessary. An outdoor screened cattery allows the residents to enjoy the warmer summer months outside. A donation in the amount of $7500.00 is required for lifetime care regardless of the age of the pet. A visit to our facility can insure you that your pet will enjoy a loving and comfortable atmosphere.
